I found this hardcover, minus its dust jacket, in this new-to-me Little Free Library in Boxborough MA while dropping off some books of my own, and I nabbed it for another release copy.

I first read this one some years back, after enjoying Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. That copy had some text on the tie-wrap that's confining the lettuce in the cover-pic: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." And that's the author's manifesto in a nutshell! (There's another book, Food Rules, that summarizes the how-to section of this book in smaller list items.)

The first half of this book is a kind of history/overview of "nutritionism", an over-emphasis of the nutritional content of food as opposed to the hard-to-quantify aspects of natural, whole foods; this includes some pretty damning accounts of food lobbyists vs. the governmental nutrition guidelines, among other things. The second half of the book focuses on the food rules, with simple but useful (and relatively pain-free) suggestions for enjoying healthier meals (with "enjoying" being one of the rules). Very well worth reading - and if this book looks too intimidating, do check out Food Rules, the capsule version with the best parts of this book!
