Journal Entry 1 by winggreenbadgerwing from St Albans, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Sunday, November 8, 2020
As a teenager growing up in a black ghetto in the US, Starr has seen her best friend Natasha shot down in a hit and run. Now she's in the car when the police shoot her unarmed friend Khalil. Starr lives between two worlds - the mainly white high school where her parents sent her to keep her safe after Natasha's death, where she has to play a part so that the other kids don't think she's an 'aggressive black girl' and the ghetto, where she's 'big Mav's daughter' and the ganglords rule. Now she has to use her voice as her weapon to stand up for Khalil, and her life is in danger as she walks a fine line between angering the police and the gangs. This book is a revelation, superbly written and essential reading for anyone - especially with the death of George Floyd and others in the news so recently.

Journal Entry 5 by wingmathgirl40wing at Waterloo, Ontario Canada on Saturday, January 30, 2021
Apart from being an excellent coming-of-age novel that kept me totally engrossed in the story, this is the right book for the current times. It provided me more insight into the social issues that are in the news today.

Thank you, greenbadger, for contributing this book to the roundabout. I will be sending if off to mcsar in the next few days.

This is the story of George Floyd, written a few years before the George Floyd incident. The author was able to give a voice to the black community in the face of these many incidences of the terrible travesty of justice. She portrayed the injustice, prejudice and racism that continues to prevail in all its ugliness. She wanted her community to not be "alone in their frustration, fear, anger and sadness."

Such a good book! Great insight into the life in a US ghetto. Also thought provoking. It raises some questions for me. To me, racism is something that needs to be eradicated - but from all sides. Through Starr's thoughts, I see some judgementalism in her as well as in her non-black friends. It does not all go one way. The minority communities need to give some grace to the other side as well if racism will even be overcome.
The book will travel on within the next few days.

This book really packs a punch. The author does such a good job of showing us the prejudices - on both 'sides'. It's such as difficult and emotional story - but there are some lighter moments too: I got some funny looks in a café when I laughed out loud when the father finds out about the boyfriend. Great choice for the roundabout - thanks for sharing!

Sorry, this one wasn't for me. I can't say that it was particularly badly written, or that I didn't like the characters, or that the story left me cold - the normal reasons why I give up on a book. I honestly think it was more about bad timing. The subject matter is hugely important and it's great to see a YA book tackling it, but at the moment, its a subject that I've been seeing in the storylines of nearly every single TV programme I watch. It no longer felt original and got a bit boring, especially as I'd reached the halfway mark and realised that nothing had actually happened since the initial shooting. Maybe its one to try again in the future.

In a time when all social differences are magnified and cruelly defined by social media a book such as this helps put one such division in some sort of context. Now for something to help with ageism, then religious divide, then social class, then North/ South divide ……….. Brilliantly written YA novel. Thank you for including it in the roundabout, greenbadger.

I am certainly not the target audience and I did struggle a little with the slang and street terminology. I used Urban Dictionary a lot and learned some new words. As a white, middle class Scot, this is as far away from my life as possible. I cannot imagine how it must feel to live in a neighbourhood where you have to all gather in a room in the middle of the house that doesn't have external walls to avoid flying bullets, to have to keep watch over your store all night in case it is trashed, to be so terrified of a police officer's approach or to live in fear.
