I got this slim hardcover from Toadstool Books in Nashua. I love Brett's style - the main illustration on each page is framed in repeating patterns that are themed on the setting or subject, frequently with tiny scenes tucked in between the framing motifs.

Here, a sleepy hedgehog wanders around the farm for a last look before he hibernats - but all the farmyard creatures tell him of their wonderful winter adventures, making him decide to try and stay awake this year...

Each main illustration has lots to look at: the scenery, the little details of trees and shrubs, rabbits and birds, a family of goats tucked away in the barn. The sky darkens as the winter moves in - and the poor silly hedgehog falls asleep right out in the open, unable to fight the urge to hibernate. Farm girl Lisa fins it, on its way to being frozen, and carries it inside to warm up (much to the annoyance of a watching owl, who - though the text does not indicate this - was quite possibly looking forward to a hedgehog snack).

The hedgehog wakes up in the warmth, and does indeed get to see the other creatures - and Lisa! - enjoying the snow and ice of winter, skating on the pond, building snowmen, hooking up the pony to a sleigh, throwing snowballs. And, sneakily, in the side panels we see the other animals crowding around to peek at the hedgehog, now cozy and warm indoors. So it's not that much of a surprise when, after Lisa takes the now-sleeping hedgehog to its proper burrow to spend the rest of the winter hibernating, she returns to the house to find - all the other animals inside!

The artwork's lovely, and the final scenes - from the hilarious one of the cozy room crammed with pony, sheep, rabbits, foxes, crows, chickens, and more to the comfy-looking peek at the hedgehog curled up in its den full of dried leaves - are charming.
