I got this softcover at Barnes and Noble. It's from a long-running manga series that inspired a 2014 anime. There's no story-so-far bit here so it took me a little research to figure out what was going on - seems to be a large-scale story of political strife, mixed with loyalties and romances and feuds that sometimes cross national or political boundaries. The story centers on Princess Yona, who's on the run after a rival king had her family slain, and who's been attempting to find a way to restore peace to the region while avoiding capture or death herself... Lots and lots of characters here, including supporting warriors - some of whom have actual dragon-like powers, which are wildly effective but cost their wielders something for each use. There are some flashbacks showing the horrors that triggered this situation, and some current-time confrontations and betrayals as well, with misunderstandings even among the most sympathetic characters, so it's all pretty intense. The most wrenching bit for me involved the stalwart warrior Neguro, who defends his princess from attacking archers by becoming a human shield... the sheer number of arrows he takes while remaining on his feet is both awesome and horrifying, and even at the end he manages one final move to save a late-arriving ally.

I was also intrigued by the character Voldo, who wears a face mask - possibly a mark of a former alliance, or a practical thing in a desert climate, but in these COVID days any face mask carries rather different significance. Anyway, he seems to be well-intentioned towards our heroine, and more level-headed than many of the other characters, but perhaps a bit too trusting.

Not a bad episode in this long-running story, if a bit confusing without a chart to show alliances and relationships!

[There's a TV Tropes entry on the series, with some helpful information and entertaining tidbits.]
