The Man Who Planted Trees

I found this handsome hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop. I'd read the book long ago - and recall my surprise when I learned it was fiction, so realistic were the descriptions of the man planting all those trees... This is a second printing of the 1985 edition from Vermont's Chelsea Green publishing company, and features woodcut engravings by Michael McCurdy.
The story is presented as the account of a traveler who encountered the solitary shepherd and witnessed his daily acorn-planting habit, and who then returned to the region decades later to see the flourishing trees...
[There's a short TV Tropes page on the animated short film based on the book.]

A quick, lyrical and very satisfying read. Trees are amazing, they stabilise the soil, absorb Carbon Dioxide, prevent flooding, provide habitats for wildlife, provide wood for fuel, building, furniture. I love the idea of a shepherd planting trees to reforest and restore a landscape. Tree Aid is a great charity working with local partners in Africa using trees to empower women as well as restore the physical environment. I love to support charities like this. It’s the closest I can get to planting lots of acorns myself.
This book will go to Yogiberri next.

Beautiful surprise that arrived today. The book itself as an object is so nice. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much.
I truly enjoyed this book. The idea of making this world greener warms my heart.
I LOVE trees and I love to hug them. I talk to them in my spirit. My nickname "Árvores" says it all. And yet, I live on an island where trees are so scarce. Life can be full of irony.
Apart from the story, I loved the art work which, in my opinion, brought this book to a higher level.
It will be traveling to Scotland next, like seeds in the wind. I hope it will warm up many more hearts in the future.

This was just lovely. Beautiful writing and beautiful woodcut illustrations to go with the text. Thank you for sharing it Arvores. The two bookcrossers I know who would like this have already read it, so I will hold onto it while I look for an appreciative reader.

I received this today. What a lovely edition: a small hardcover with gorgeous wood engraving illustrations. I may have read this before online, I'm not sure. Whether it will be my first or second time, I'm really looking forward to reading it. Thank you very much for the RABCK.
