Legendary Science Fiction novel/thriller, from the "grandfather" and one of the inventors of CyberPunk.
I liked this book a lot. It has inspired so many other authors and artists, including the "Matrix" movies.
It is about a disturbed world sometime in the near future, mainly taking place in "ex"-United States and Japan, though some things have changed dramatically, compared to today. The United States have split up into small independent states, and some of its regions and big cities are not governed anymore by a functioning administration. On the other hand, a huge earthquake has destroyed vast parts of Japan and of the US West-Coast. In all parts of the world, people struggle hard for survival. Biotechnology has advanced enormously, and many people improve their body with costly implements. The story is not easy to tell, it is about data trading, power of multinational corporations, the Net, virtual reality, and contains some serious philosophical concepts.
Certainly a book for adult readers with a broad view of the world and modern technology, but definitively an enjoyable read!
(actually, I first read it some 20 years ago during a long stay in The Gambia - purchased at Timbooktoo bookstore in Fajara)
