Mailed to hyphen8 for the wishlist tag game.
ARC trade paperback received as a wishlist tag, along with a cute fall-themed bookmark. Thank you! (Zoomable photo here.)
This is a lovely cover by Julianna Lee.
Apparently this book has generated a fair bit of controversy. León Krauze thought the book was ok, but not worth the hype. Sandra Cisneros supports it. Oprah chose it for her book club.
I guess I (as a non-Latinx great-grandchild of immigrants of not-perfectly-spotless legality) should read it and decide for myself...

A book from my wishlist! Thank you so much!
Plot twist after plot twist. Although the book seemed unlikely in the way that action-adventure-hero movies do, I was drawn in by the story because I've heard so many other tales like it; about the danger people face in their own towns. Acapulco in particular seems to be an especially written-of place. Either it's even worse than we can imagine for girls there or it's just one of many places where trafficking runs rampant. And yet -- "Acapulco" still conjures up tropical paradise.
Not for me anymore. I'd be scared to death to see what life is really like there.
If you like this book, I highly recommend Prayers for the Stolen by Jennifer Clement.
