I got this softcover from an online seller. It's a novel inspired by the true story of faithful dog Hachiko, who now has several statues in his honor. Indeed, it's quite true to the actual story, with only the addition of a fictional child and his family as part-time caretakers of Hachi the dog (and with a charming romance added on at the end, as the now-grown boy meets a young woman whose date stood her up - at Hachiko's statue!).

I admit I got a bit sniffly at the bits where Hachi starts waiting in vain for his lost master, and then when his own time comes. And the sculptor's comments about his process for creating the statue were also a bit emotional... None of which would have been a problem (I cry easily when reading books with emotional scenes), except that the cable repair guy was working on my TV, so I had to try and sniffle unobtrusively {grin}.
