Hallo daar, gelukkige vinder!

This has arrived with me in a returned bookbox.

I am unsure if I will be able to read this but if I do not try, I will never know, so off to tbr for a spell.

Journal Entry 6 by Flutterbies9 at Meare, Somerset United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 4, 2021
Well, I am very glad I gave this book a try although it is not a genre I usually give much shelf room.

Completely fascinating, and the sense of some personal accounting throughout the telling was stunning. Beautifully written with almost surreal overtones but gives the flavour of the dislocation of the disjointed unreal incidents as they occur and their effects on the writer.

Although I was unsure when I started this how far ( if any at all) I would manage to read of this book, I found myself glued to the pages for nights of absorbing reading until I completed it! I am not someone who likes gory scenarios in my reading but the scenes in this book did require some rather graphic descriptions which even though unpleasant, were necessary to the evocation of the events. The dehumanisation of the combatants was not glossed over but used to effect in the storyline, whilst still managing to keep one step away from the heat of the battles.

Glad I retreated from my normal comfort zones of reading for this book as it was well worth the effort, however at present, I do not have any plans for this short book. I did offer the book to Mr Flutterbies9, but he was not keen as he is avidly reading all the early Ian Rankin novels at present and had no wish to break off yet. Perhaps I will send it on its way again in another bookbox but meanwhile it is available.

This is beautifully written but a harrowing read. It took me a while to get used to the jumps from past to present. It made me cry several times but I'm so glad that I read it.

"There is a sharp distinction between what is remembered, what is told and what is true."

Powers mixes poetry with prose to give a truly stylish rendition of the horror of war where it's young participants are constantly fearful and on alert, where nerves are continually on edge. However, I also had a few minor issues with it. I felt that a little judicious editing would have helped, at times I felt that it went a little overboard not just about the brutality that these young men and women faced daily but also the mis-information that was being fed both to them and to the public back home, nor was I totally convinced that the momentous decision that Bartle and his Sergeant make was a strictly necessary even though I understand the reasoning behind it by two brutalised minds. Personally I felt that Powers was trying to batter the reader into submission rather than let them come to their own conclusions.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Perhaps the real problem that history tells us this was a war with no real definitive winner one way or the other but it could also be that it was simply too recent, too close to home (my brother served out there with the British Army). Or it could be a simple case of poor timing given what is happening in the Ukraine at present and its the 40th anniversary of my own experiences in the Falklands.

All the same for a first novel its a remarkable piece of writing that deserves to be widely read but oddly I feel that if it had been written in memoir form rather than a novel it would have been even better.

This surprise RABCK arrived this morning. Thank you.

I have just finished a book this morning and am considering what to read next. I had picked up another one and was a couple of pages in. However it might be usurped by this.....

Journal Entry 15 by wingDelticwing at Ossett, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 20, 2022
That was a powerful read. I'm not used reading about wars more recent than World War 2, and I thought that I would struggle to read the book without having to stop to read something less harrowing. Instead I found it absolutely fascinating and couldn't put it down. I actually finished reading on Easter Sunday but have only just found time to make my journal entry.
Time now for some lightish murder fiction to relax a little.
