A modern German classic, the first book selected for Borderless Book Club: https://www.peirenepress.com/borderless-book-club/
A mother and her two teenage children sit at the dinner table. In the middle stands a large pot of cooked mussels. Why has the father not returned home? As the evening wears on, we glimpse the issues that are tearing this family apart.

Reserved for echode
On its way to echode by surface mail. Safe travels, little book!
Arrived safely this week, thank you shnedwards! Looks like an intriguing story...

...and indeed it was! Intriguing & insidious, a quick but creepy read. Not sure I liked the writing style, as the repetitious prose made what could've been a short story into a "novel", though it did lend comedic respite.

Loved this book! I found it in a little free library in Fremont and hadn’t gotten around to it until now. So glad I finally read it. I’ve never read anything like it. I really enjoyed the writing and the imagery. I loved how the family slowly then very quickly unraveled as you discovered more about their life.
Would have loved to keep this book, but I love this community and want to pass it on. Happy reading!
