A history of pronoun use in English, and the long search for an ungendered singular pronoun. It feels a bit padded in places - like the author had a bit much material for an essay, but not quite enough for a book, so he repeats a lot, both within the text and in the extensive chronology of every ungendered pronoun coining (and re-coining) and subsequent debate for the past 250 years. But it could come in handy as a reference the next time someone complains about singular they being invented by millenials...
