I doubt any trans or gender non-conforming person has ever read a fantasy story about shape-shifting and not contemplated its application to transition. This book takes that idea and runs with it: the protagonist is able to alter his body at will, so he shape-shifts between genders, initially for sexual experimentation, but gradually begins to understand there is more to it than that.
