I found this UK-edition softcover in this icebox-turned-LFL in Littleton MA while dropping off some books of my own. It's a lyrical, disturbing, wrenching tale of young love and loss - all patterned on the myth of Orpheus and Euridyce, down to the grisly ending. Here, North country friends Ella and Claire are entranced by Orpheus, a charismatic musician. Their story follows the myth, including Ella's death, Orpheus' trip into the afterworld for her (whether a literal trip, a drug trip, or something else can be debated), and the aftermath - and while there is a coda that suggests a somewhat happier ending for the trio, most of the story deals with the torment of unrequited love, lost love, even of fulfilled love when it comes with jealousy...
