I got this softcover at Barnes and Noble. I enjoyed Volume One and wanted to read more. This one picks up a bit down the line, with Master Qifrey having been wounded, and another mage, Orugio, helping the four apprentices carry him to safety. They wind up in the Great Hall, a central home for witches - and one that's completely underwater, using magic to sustain life and a feeling of above-ground normalcy. In charge is the wise Beldarut, a mage who travels around in a chair that looks and moves like the body and legs of a goat, with goat-horns at the sides serving as arm-rests. (Turns out Beldarut is indeed paraplegic, and spends most of his time in bed, using the chair when necessary and conjuring images of himself to be out and about when he cannot.)
The plot also features a test for the apprentices, one they apparently missed out on in previous volumes due to unexpected interruptions. Beldarut offers them a challenge: if they can come up with magic that surprises him, he'll consider that they've passed the test. Cue some lovely and inventive collaboration!
As ever, the artwork's lovely, and the story has many intruging elements. Here we learn that Beldarut was Qifrey's teacher - but not why they are seemingly estranged now. And it seems Beldarut has his eye on a new apprentice from among the four girls...
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
