I'd only read two Nora Roberts books before this one, Brazen Virtue, which I have no memory of now, and Divine Evil, which I vaguely remember, and which I mentioned in my JE “some of her writing is cliched.” But the cover of this book drew me to it, and, well, I'm here to tell you that Black Hills has put Ms. Roberts front and center of my radar and made a believer out of me. I loved this book. Seriously, loved it. Now I understand why Ms. Roberts is so dang popular.
I'm now adding this book to mrsjones' Bookbox of Surprisingly Good Books.

This book was a pleasant surprise and it's a friends to lover trope that I enjoyed. Lil runs a wildlife refuge on her family's land in South Dakota and is being threatened for unknown reasons. Her childhood love, Coop, has returned to care for his elderly grandparents. Because of his background as a former cop, he gets involved in the investigation and sparks fly again. The secondary characters were really enduring and added to the romance and suspense aspect of this story.
