I got this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop, for another release copy. This is another book in McCrumb's "Elizabeth MacPherson" mysteries, which I've really enjoyed.

[Spoiler warning, if you haven't read the previous books in the series - and if you like reading series in order:]

The book itself is somewhat darker than some of the others, not least because as it opens we learn that Elizabeth's husband Cameron has been lost at sea... She's trying to cope by going to work for her brother Bill and his partner A. P., who've started a law firm, though there isn't much they can offer to a forensic anthropologist. But then they get two cases in which a wife seems to have murdered her husband, and Elizabeth gets involved in the investigations. One case seems on the surface to be a simple matter of abused wife taking vengeance; the other seems to have no obvious explanation. Neither turns out to be quite what it first appeared...

There's a bizarre sub-plot involving a woman with a fetish for dolphins; I don't even want to hint at where that goes, but it's a jaw-dropper!

While the story's not without humor, I did miss Cousin Geoffrey; he's mentioned but doesn't have nearly as big a role as in some other books. [One flashback in which he is mentioned refers to Fall River, MA, when he and Elizabeth went looking for the Lizzie Borden house; McCrumb reports that it was hard to find and that the community did not welcome queries. This is something that's changed considerably since this book was published; the Borden house is a bed-and-breakfast now, restored to look as it did at the time of the murders, and there are Lizzie Borden museums and exhibits all over Fall River!]
