A woman gets into a car accident and says she is Heather Bethany, one of the long lost and presumed dead daughters of a Baltimore couple. She appears to know an awful lot about the Bethany's but still something seems off, to the police, to the social worker. 'Heather' is sly, manipulative, and pushy and frankly, not that likeable. She tells a horrifying tale of sexual and physical abuse, imprisonment and constant changing of identity, and lays it at the feet of an ex-police officer, who is now living with dementia in a care home. The investigators are loathe to pin this on one of their own, especially one that is literally at death's door.
Lippman keeps the reader guessing until the end, and again makes Baltimore a major character in the story. I love Lippman's writing and story telling, and find her books addictive like potato chips.
