I liked this far more than I thought I would. It's the story of a creative, anxious young woman's first year of college. Cath's safety blanket is yanked away from her, when her twin Wren informs her that she will not be her dorm roommate. Although Cath is devastated by this, it actually works out far better for her than Wren, who goes on a non-stop partying binge. Cath's passion is Simon Snow, a book series written by Gemma T. Leslie, based on a boy that attends a magical school and has a deadly enemy who is targeting him...hmmm, that sounds familiar. Because there is always a lapse between books, many fans respond with their own fan fiction. Cath does too, based on Simon having an unrequited love affair with his nemesis, Baz. This is not a part of canon, but the fanfic community has responded well to Cath's writing and she has thousands that hang on to her every word. Rowell either had fun or was driven slightly batty with the mega aspect of this book. What I mean is, she's writing her novel, Fangirl, but she's also writing Simon Snow excerpts as Gemma T. Leslie and thirdly writing as Magicath, Cath's fanfic response to Gemma's writing. Three, three, three authors in one! Luckily, Rowell seems up to the task. I especially liked one passage where Cath see's her new boyfriend and of course would never run into his arms yelling but instead does her version of that by giving him a nervous half smile. She is so on target with the way someone who is anxious thinks, and it's funny without being mocking. This is YA, but the writing is far better than the last regular fiction I read.
