Text on the cover:
Waris Dirie is a remarkable woman whose spirit is as breathtaking as her beauty. She lives a double life - by day she is an internationally famous model and a spokesperson on women's rights in Africa - at night she dreams of home in her native Somalia.
Waris ran away from her desert nomad family at the age of 12 when her father arranged her marriage to a 60-year old stranger in exchange for 5 camels. She escaped through the harsh Somalian desert and travelled to London where she was discovered by a fashion photographer. But she bore with her the harsh memory and real pain of an ancient custom: circumcision, administered to her at the tender age of 5.

I watched the film long before I read the book, nevertheless the story caught me once again. In the book you understand much better the cruelty of circumcision and you learn a lot about the life of the Somalian nomads. It is amazing how Waris Dirie managed to get out of this by venturing again and again without any fear into complete uncertainty.
