I found this softcover ARC in this Little Free Library in Nashua NH while dropping off some books of my own, and couldn't resist it. It's a novel in verse about the devastating Johnstown Flood. (I read The Johnstown Flood by David Attenborough some time back; recommended!)
This book sketches the events leading up to the flood, the chaos during it, and the melancholy and troubled aftermath, switching viewpoints across a number of survivors, some victims, and some outsiders - including the wealthy men whose pet project contributed to the dam's failure, and who donated to the rescue efforts but never admitted to any responsibility on their part. The most harrowing entries are from the viewpoints of children, some of whom had to watch their families perish; others deal with the trauma of the rescuers as they turned up so many drowned or battered or burned bodies, sometimes of entire families...
