I got this slim softcover from Better World Books. It's a rather snarky and occasionally profane tale of a squid who became a pirate, leading his crew of other marine-life on voyages of adventure and plunder. (Turns out the reason so many pirates have peg-legs is that Peter and his low-lying crew wield their swords at no more than knee-height when battling humans - who knew?) Peter's not without that swaggering pirate charm, either - at one point he has to make love to a huge octopus boss-lady to save his crew. (Eventually they have to battle the Contessa; turns out Peter's crew features some crabs who are adept at de-limbing cephalopods.)

By the end of the book Peter's been reunited with the pirate who raised him from a tiny little squid, and they join forces and set out to terrorize the seven seas. So, a happy ending! [This is NOT the children's book I thought it was going to be when I bought it {wry grin}.]

The book ends with a recipe for drunken squid, marinated in rum and basil, then coated and deep-fried. Mmmmm!
