This hardback has been on my keeper shelves for a decade or two since I last read it. It tells the disturbing tale of journalist John McCarthy's 5 year imprisonment in Beirut in the 1980s and the valiant efforts of his partner Jill Morrell to get him released.
I enjoyed the book first time around and am presently re-reading it before I release it.

REVIEW:-I first read this book decades ago but really enjoyed re-reading it. I found it incredibly emotional at times both when reading about the hostages time in captivity and also when they were struggling to cope with their eventual freedom. Some of the very complicated politics went over my head but this didn't spoil my overall enjoyment. I liked how the book was divided into sections written by both John McCarthy and Jill Morrell, telling the story from both points of view. One of the most upsetting elements was learning of the effects of incarceration on the hostages mental health for a long while after their release. Five and a half years is an incredibly long time to be imprisoned with, at times, no news from the outside world and no clue as to when you would be released."

I think I'll keep this to send as an extra RABCK at some time as I feel it's too good to wild release.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This book was sent as a surprise RABCK to another bookcrosser.

To the finder:-
Welcome to bookcrossing -you have found a travelling book. Please make a journal entry now to say where you found the book in case it has been moved. Then, when you have read it, please come back and make a further entry saying whether or not you enjoyed the book and why. It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

I met John once, many years ago, when he came to speak post-release at Hull University (I was a current student and he a graduate). It was an incredible evening and I'll read this with great interest.
Thanks for the RABCK.

It's a fascinating story of an incredibly brave guy but it's too heavy to post so I have taken it to my local Tesco for their charity book table while doing my weekly shop.
I wonder if we will ever hear of it again.
