Commissario Guido Brunetti faces a lot of challenges in his work at the Venice Questura. He also faces challenges, at times, at home. In this novel he faces both.

Brunetti's wife Paola has trouble standing by when she perceives that the laws are not protecting the innocent. When she learns that a local travel agency is advertising "sex tours" - mainly tours to Thailand and other countries where tourists can indulge in sex with young girls - she is determined to do something about it, to stop it.

Thus she takes a rock and throws it at the window of the agency, causing it to shut down temporarily. Paola is not afraid of being caught; in fact she waits for it.

The act does shut down the agency for a short while. Her husband quietly removes her from the police station, no report filed on her, but he can't do the same thing the second time it happens.

But then there is a murder, and Paola is one obvious suspect. Brunetti is being scrutinized while he takes on the case. His superior officer wants him to keep his wife under control or else.

The victim may have been chosen because of the connection to the sex tours. Or not. Brunetti can't make assumptions, so the work begins, and leads to another city and other possible motives. Did Paola's actions motivate the killer to act now?

Brunetti is torn. He is there to uphold the law and his wife broke it. He can't really understand why. While making progress with the case the relationship between the two undergoes some rocky times. Will it come out unscathed?

One of the appeals to this series is the realness of Brunetti and his family, his soul-searching, his compassion for others, and Paola's strength and self-confidence. I wanted more from Guido this time, more of an effort to understand Paola and himself.

****spoiler alert********

I had some trouble understanding what Paola really wanted from her actions. Throwing a rock through a window, then not even making a statement about it? Not raising awareness by talking to the newspapers? It seemed a pitiful action that had no way of making a difference.

I further had trouble understanding why Guido could not appreciate his wife's motivation, however misdirected. And why the two didn't have a conversation about how real change could take place. In the end, nothing is accomplished in that respect, and the two seem okay with going on with their lives. Paola is even ashamed of her actions, worrying that she may have given the murderer an excuse for acting, even though she knew better.
