Dear me, this was not very cheery AT ALL. It's apparently Edith Wharton's most widely read book, but I wonder if that is more because it is very short, than because the story is particularly compelling.

Haha, this book started its journey about a mile away from my house, went to Canada, and then travelled all the way back across the ocean again :-).

My word, that was grim. I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say there is no happy ending here.
But the writing is very evocative, and it has an interesting plot structure.
