I was pleased to see some new books in my Little Free Library today; should have known they'd be from Ghost_Dog! Just wanted to add my comments to this one, while leaving it in the LFL for someone else.

This is the first of Yarbro's ongoing series of historical fiction about heroic vampire Count Saint-Germain; I must have read it soon after it came out, and have followed the series ever since. [Note: the series appears out of chronological order, following the Count's adventures from WWII back to ancient Egypt and forward again. Whether this affects your preference for reading order is up to you; most of the books work perfectly well as standalones, though there are some changes in relationships that may be spoiled if you read the books out of publication order.]

This one's set in Paris of the 1700's, and introduces Madelaine de Montalia, who will have a significant role to play in Saint-Germain's long life - and who, later on, will feature as the heroine of several books of her own.

The story also features some exceedingly nasty villains, including a coven of devil-worshippers; but, as always, the historical details are practically a character in themselves. Historical fiction featuring elements of business practices (often via letters from the Count to his various agents or theirs to him), social and religious commentary, political issues - being a vampire isn't easy {wry grin}.

I'm taking back the books that have been in the LFL the longest, to re-release them elsewhere.
