Top forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd has performed over 23,000 autopsies. A detective in his own right, he must solve the mystery of sudden or unexplained deaths: how did this person die? In pursuit of the truth, he has tackled serial killers, natural disasters, 'perfect murders' and freak accidents. His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads. Yet all this has come at a huge personal cost.

This is an amazing book. I was astounded to realise how many 'disasters' there were in my early adult years that he investigated, from Hungerford to the Bali bombings but I'm sure I've missed something in my timings with this review. Getting the inside story to many of these incidents is very revealing. However it is no surprise that he ended up with PTSD. It is very easy to say he was distant in his marriage but was that his way of trying to keep family life and the horror of his working life separate?

A fascinating book, if a little depressing at the end when the author describes the privatisation of forensic pathology. I remember the cases he was involved in. So interesting to hear about them from this perspective.

An autobiography from one of the UK's top forensic pathologists, this is absolutely fascinating. Shepherd has over the years been involved in many famous cases, ranging from large scale disasters like the Marchioness to tragic incidents of shaken baby syndrome. It's obvious that Shepherd cares hugely about getting the facts correct to get justice for the dead, as well as having played an important role in improving knowledge in the field over the years. I found myself getting quite emotional at parts of this but Shepherd himself must remain dispassionate at all times, even in the face of difficult court brangles and public scrutiny. This caused problems in his home life though his upbringing also sounds troubled. That Shepherd is able to be so open about the impact on himself as well as the interesting way he describes his work makes this a really good read.

I really enjoyed this fascinating memoir about the world of forensic medicine. I'm a huge fan of murder mysteries and it was interesting to compare the fictional portrayals of forensic pathologists and their work to the real-life versions. Thanks, earthcaroleanne, for contributing this book to the roundabout!

Very enlightening and well-written. A life devoted to the truth but a sad one too. A bit tedious though and not very optimistic for the future.
Thanks for sharing eartcaroleanne.

This was a really interesting read. I only know about forensic pathology as it is portrayed in many TV series, so this was a welcome introduction to the real thing as told by a pathologist himself. Written in a catching way, even though a bit sad in the end as others have noted.
Thank you for sharing.

So maybe this was not my favorite book, at least not in the first 2/3 of the book. I had a hard time figuring out if I'm reading an autobiography or a book about forensic pathology. I realize that as a forensic pathologist, he would obviously write about this topic, but there were looooong stretches with just stories about forensic pathology but nothing else about his life, and then suddenly out of nowhere came a short story of his wife or children or whatever. I found that strange. In the end it got better.
In any case, a great choice for the roundabout because this is one of those books that I would not have picked up in a store. It's just not my favorite.

This is without a doubt one of my best reads of this year! It's really fascinating. All the cases he writes about are, unfortunately, so familiar from the news at the time. I liked his style of writing and for me he struck the right balance between the factual and the emotional. Thank you very much for sharing, a great choice!

This book is absolutely, completely, up my street. I think if I'd known as much about forensics as I know now, I would have seriously pursued it as a career. Therefore, I found this book fascinating. Definitely parts where a handy box of tissues is needed (the case of the old lady or his version of 9/11!), although there is some humour there as well. A Fab read.

I only meant to skim read but I ended up being absorbed in every single page because it was so interesting. Richard Shepherd dealt with so many harrowing events that it’s no wonder he eventually suffered with PTSD. Definitely a good choice for the Roundabout. Thank you.

I picked this up at the Newcastle unconvention as it looked interesting. I took it away on holiday with me and have now read it. My intention was to wild release it in France, however I may well bring it back as it has been book crossed so much. I also think my sister would enjoy it.
I initially thought it was really morbid, and to be fair it was, however it was much more than that. The recognition of the negative impact his job had on him, even though he was doing a job he loved, was really good to hear (although sad of course!) Also his human understanding of how difficult raising a baby was and how he could conceive that babies could be injured because of this (whilst not saying it was right)
The book really gives an outline of many of the horrible things that have happened in the UK and other countries over the last 30 years or so. I found these fascinating, especially the Princess Diana stories. It was also good to see that improvements to safety have been the result of many sad events that have occurred.
