Partial excerpt from the back cover of the book...This Zuni Indian Myth was first recorded over a century ago. "In our society," Tony Hillerman explains, "this would be called a 'Bible story.' Like stories based on the Old Testament, this narrative is intended to teach both the history and morality of a people."

I'd say Children's Book over Western for genre listed, and really less a struggle of good and evil "moral" story, more a story illustrating the reckless irresponsible inconsiderate decision making some who have become selfish, greedy, and arrogant make that adversely affects the lives of a great many others.

I also wonder how accurate Tony Hillerman's "interpretation" of anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing's "interpretation" of the Original Zuni Legend really is, as in the "Author's Notes on The Boy Who Made Dragonfly" section following his "A Zuni Myth Retold", the author shares his viewpoint of the story of Creation in the Old Testament in a manner that seems to point to an arrogant disrespect and disconnect in that he indicates that he believes we were made lords of the universe, with dominion over the birds and beasts, and that the Zuni story of Creation makes us one with the universe. Hello 🙋‍♀️ ...WE ARE ALL ONE PEOPLE...people, and we ARE meant to be part of universal harmony. Having been given "dominion" over something is a privilege and serious responsibility in regards to stewardship and management. It is not meant to give right to abuse the authority of respectfully providing care for any person, creature, planet, nature, public lands, and/or other Blessings from above...just saying.

This story doesn't just "concern a drought in which the Zuni crops were ruined", it clearly teaches the important role cause and effect play in the universe, as the CAUSE of the drought was the DISRESPECT the Zuni leaders who became boastfully arrogant had for the abundant blessings that had been bestowed upon them, and how one little boy...wise beyond his years, made a profound difference in their mindset after they suffered the consequences of their arrogant ways. In my humble opinion, attitudes of superiority, which in my experience is extremely prevalent in the mindset of a great many former Military Personnel, who are taught in Boot Camp to disconnect at all costs as a means of being able to perform their duties in service to our country...THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, but are never given training to "reconnect" upon reentry into civilian life on a level that helps them heal from their in intense disconnect training, greatly contribute to the CAUSE of a great many worldly predicaments.
