I bought this today and am about 1/3 way through it.
Stuart Stevens is a Mississippi-born political consultant who started in the business in the late 70s. This book does a good job of describing how the Republican Party lost its way, with increasing levels of hypocrisy, racism and general lowering of standards. He believes that Donald Trump, far from being an outlier, is really just the logical conclusion of a half century of wrong choices. I heard him interviewed last week on Fresh Air on NPR, and knew I wanted to read it. When asked what he thought the strategy between now and Nov. 3 would be, he said something to the effect of bare-knuckle racism. Then Biden chose Kamala Harris as his running mate, and I watched Trump fans launch on her. So Stevens seems to be bang on the money.
