I remember this book being read to my class when we were eight. I enjoyed the writing style and the pace of the book is great for youngish readers (new to chapter book sort of reading level).
I do find it strange for my teacher to think New Zealand children would be able to relate to such British things as fox hunting, oust houses, and class structure. The sexism in the book ages it poorly.
