"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."

One of the most evocative first lines ever.
This novel is special for me; I first read it at University, at the English Literature subject, and really loved it.
This was reinforced by watching the film with Julie Christie and Alan Bates, one of my all-time favourites.
I hope its next reader will feel the same.
This is a cute pocket edition: a hardback with gold-rimmed pages.

REVIEW:-"I really enjoyed this well-written classic although at times the author was a trifle verbose for my taste. I sympathised a lot with Leo as he tried to fit in with a family much more affluent that his own. I felt he was badly taken advantage of by the two lovers who cared more about their love affair and secret missives than for a young impressionable boy who was desperate to be popular.
I was heartily glad that Marcus wasn't my best friend when he advised Leo "And there's another thing you mustn't do. When you undress you wrap your clothes up and put them on a chair. Well, you mustn't. You must leave them where they fall-the servants will pick them up-that's what they're for."
And as for Marcus' showing off by speaking French to his friend who had a lesser mastery of the language, well-words (in English) fail me! A very sad ending to the main story and I felt the Epilogue was a little rushed but it did round things off as did the Afterword."
Reserved for my sister-in-law who is fond of the classics and says she would love to read it. I shall ask her to return it so I can find another good home for it as she isn't a bookcrosser.

Welcome to bookcrossing -you have found a travelling book. Please make a journal entry now to say where you found the book in case it has been moved. Then, when you have read it, please come back and make a further entry saying whether or not you enjoyed the book and why. It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

A young boy, staying with a wealthy family, is used by a pair of lovers as their messenger. As Leo tries to fit into a social circle where he's not quite familiar with the rules, tension builds as it becomes obvious that the illlicit affair will somehow come out. I'm afraid I really didn't enjoy this, I didn't like any of the characters: Leo, with his weird obsession with magic and the zodiac, snobbish Marcus, careless and beautiful Marian, moody Ted. I found it a bit boring, it feels like I somehow missed the point.
