Before reading this book, the idea of a seventeen-year-old American-born Chinese girl living in 1890s Atlanta, Georgia would never have occurred to me. I knew about the workers on the Transcontinental Railroad, but Chinese laborers being brought in to work on Southern plantations after the Civil War was a surprise.
Articulate and feisty, Jo Kuan is a delight.
Also, this is a lovely book cover.

Book arrived safe & sound. Thank you for this, and the accompanying beautiful bookmarks!!
I'm really enjoying Stacy Lee's YA historical fictions. Not only are the characters giving voice to under-represented groups, the plots are also thoroughly researched and insightful learning experiences about the American histories not taught in most public schools.
Looking forward to more Lee reading opportunities!
