The story of 13-year old Dicey Tillerman and her siblings James, Maybeth and Sammy who are left in a parked car at a shopping mall by their confused mother. What follows is the Tillerman children's journey to their aunt in Bridgeport, Connecticut, who turns out to have died a few years ago. Dicey desperately wants to stay out of the hands of the authorities, because she is afraid that they will be split up and put into foster care. Eventually they end up with their grandmother in Maryland, who reluctantly takes them in. Nice story, first in a series.
