" (Anita) Brookner draws characters and settings beautifully; but her best attribute is a finely calibrated understanding of longing trapped in convention" - Wall Street Journal "Brookner works a spell on the reader; being under it is both an education and a delight" - Washington Post Book World. Anita Brookner is one of my favourite novelists. I am not sure how many men would say that, as her books tend to detail the inner and outer lives of women "of a certain age" - usually women 40 and older. Romantic relationships with men seem hazy and without passion. There is inner turmoil and unfulfilled wishes, but Brookner somehow manages to end her novels without leaving you feeling down. Either the woman realises she's having a very good life on her own, or she starts up a new relationship...or....the man comes back! Professor Anita Brookner: (Jul. 16, 1928 – Mar. 10, 2016)
