Picked this up from an open bookshelf. Yes, some other readers were right, there is a horrible racist caricature somewhere in the middle of the story (it's a Victorian/Georgian stage magic performance, in which somebody is dressed up as a "horrible Chinaman"). While this is probably a quite accurate depiction of what was going on at the time, a comment by our slightly more contemporary protagonist or some trustworthy adult character might have done some good. Other than that, this book was definitely more fun than I expected, especially since the copy that came into my hands was a German translation (and I'm sure that especially the bits of poetry are much, much better in the original - I've looked up the Dowson, and I love it!). All of the countless references are accurate, and I even learned a thing or two! Recommended (with caution, see above).
