The Ghosting of Anne Armstrong
8 journalers for this copy...
This highly original book isn't the easiest read, but it's also fascinating. The author brings together the tale of Anne Armstrong, who in 1673 accused a whole number of her neighbours of witchcraft, with snippets of the story of a historical researcher into her story, and occasional glimpses of Anne's present day ghost. I'd never heard of Anne Armstrong despite being from the area, but the author has obviously done considerable research into how Northumberland would have been in the period as well as into Anne herself.

I found this rather heavy going but addictive. An unusual style of writing which I liked. What an interesting person Ann was.

Fascinating fictionalised account. I did find this quite hard to read and it required my full attention. I had a brief break to read a more light-hearted book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it fascinating - a glimpse into a time, way of life and beliefs that were so different from today.
I already have Sparkish's address, so I'll send the book off next week.

I found it very difficult to get into this book and the first 50 pages felt like really hard work. However after this I seemed to get used to the style of writing and found it an interesting read. I've got quite a fancy to visit The Wellington Inn if I ever get a chance.

Currently reading it... and I must confess that, just like Poodlesister, I had to alternate between it and a lighter book of Halloween short stories... :)

I'm with Bookworm-lady here in that I found it hard to get into & didn't particularly look forward to picking it up either...however I did finish it!
The style doesn't make for easy reading, & while it does make you feel that you're reading the accounts of 17th century events - which you are in some cases as it's taken from actual transcripts - it was a style I struggled with. This was especially so in relation to the court sessions. Here there was a lot of repetition but sadly going over things again didn't do anything to help clarify things for me.
Every so often there'd be a chapter that would pull you back through the centuries & up-to-date. The ones regarding the National Archives were too factual in a text book way for my liking but then there were the intriguing newspaper clippings & tales of the haunted Wellington Inn & these items I found fascinating.
The blurb says "the narrative is shot through with questions" Does the book answer them? Well to be honest, the answer for me is no, in fact it's left me with more questions than I started with....but then I just couldn't give it the concentration it needed which is possibly why I found it so muddling.
Overall, the concept of the book is one that really appealed to me but in reality it wasn't for me.

Agreed, this wasn't an easy read. For me it started OK but the current chapters were very academic, then 1673 chapter became repetitive as we continually went over the 'evidence'. I've got to admit I was skimming by the end of the book as it didn't hold my attention.
ETA - I've been asked to keep this until the Newcastle uncon actually happens.
