In 1979, four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate - and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns in evidence for the state and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace. Now it's 1989 and one of the perpetrators, Fritz McCabe, has been released from prison. Unrepentant and angry, he is a virtual prisoner of his ever-watchful parents - until a copy of the missing tape arrives with a ransom demand. That's when the McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help. As she is drawn into their family drama, she keeps a watchful eye on Fritz. But he's not the only one being haunted by the past....

I really enjoyed this book but had to pay attention to the time changes between chapters. I found the teenagers (and their parents) all vey unlikeable and they didn’t improve any when they became adults. There was a huge amount going on in the side stories, which you could follow and I suspect some of them might have being going somewhere for the next book – but it didn’t happen. Nonetheless, it is surprisingly tied up for a book that wasn’t meant to be the last in the series. I did wonder how she was going to tie everything up as there didn’t seem to be enough pages left but I had forgotten this was a report for her files and there would be an epilogue. The explanation of the final murder was maybe a little vague but it can still be worked out. I’m going to miss Kinsey, a lot.

Sorry I'm not going to read this one. I couldn't believe that Kinsey could watch the tape & not want to go to the police. The conversation with the guy about copying it was just wrong. I didn't get any further. Anyway sorry again.
There isn't a list for who wants this book. Let me know & I'll pass it on.

PI Kinsey Millhone is called in when a convicted murderer is being blackmailed. The story follows both the present day investigation, with Kinsey digging into the stories of four unpleasant teenage boys who filmed themselves raping a school-mate, and the events of ten years earlier when a classmate who steals the video is killed. Kinsey is also still being pursued by Ned Lowe, the psychopath she uncovers in the previous novel. Once again this is a great read, a real page turner. I'm really sad that there is no Z to tie up all the loose ends but the ending of this does tie up a lot and I feel like there's a few hints in there as to what will happen with Kinsey next.

In 1979 four teenaged boys tape a sexual assault of a classmate. Ten years later, Kinsey is hired to locate a blackmailer who is threatening to send the tape to the cops if one boy's family does not pay up. At the same time, Ned Lowe from the previous novel resurfaces and Kinsey is looking over her shoulder in an attempt to avoid him while she works on the case. This is another thick book, which always seems daunting to me, but easy to read and keep track of all that is going on. Some chapters outline the sequence of events from 1979 to fill in the back story.

I can hardly believe that this is the last novel in the series. I will really miss reading about Kinsey and her adventures. Many thanks, earthcaroleanne, for including me in this spiral, and thanks to all who were willing to mail to Canada!

A strange feeling knowing this is the last in the series - I wonder if Grafton knew. Here she focuses on two main threads. The main one concerns a group of high school students and the story goes back and forth between the time of the crime and Kinsey's present (late 1980s). The second is a continuation of one of the threads from the previous story, with Ned who disappeared.
I have enjoyed these stories and am even almost tempted to try a peanut butter and pickle sandwich... Interestingly the whole theme of Kinsey's family was left by the wayside at some point. I look forward to the related book which is apparently edging its way towards me through the spiral.
Yet again, many, many thanks for organizing this spiral and to everyone who participated, keeping it rolling smoothly.
This will head to Romania soon.

Now with me on its next-to-last official stop. Thank you all so much!

Journal Entry 21 by lamelemon at București, Wallachia Romania on Monday, September 12, 2022
Halfway through the book I was so annoyed with what I thought were inconsistencies (why make such a fuss about the tape if you know it's fake and/or you're still friends with the "victim"? so what if it surfaces, there's no one to blame you? why is every ex-teenager still so incredibly downright stupid? spoiled rich kids all with what looks so much as a learning disability? why did Kinsey accept this assignment and why is she basically covering up the whole sorry mess? why did she invent that super silly cover story that nobody believes or cares about?) that I jumped and read the epilogue. I finished the whole book afterwards, over a few more days, and it was bearable although surely nowhere my favourite in the series. I think that what curbed my enthusiasm was the pressure of it being the last book in the series - it wasn't that bad, but I wanted it to be more than good. And don't get me started about Ned.. national mandate, so many murders up his sleeve, and he waltzes right into everything without anybody batting an eye?

Whew. Now that I've blown the steam, thank you earthcaroleanne for pushing all of us so much beyond our comfort zones with this long and fruitful commitment - and thank you to all who made it possible. Over the last more than four years, the next book in the series was always something to look forward to.

The book is finally on its way to the last reader.
