Time of Tides

The title story features a family that's taken their boat onto the Broads to try and escape the results of catastrophic flooding and storms - only to find that there are weirder things in the water and the sky than weather. The party dwindles one by one, to accidents and increasingly awful encounters with the strange beings, until the survivors are forced to take extreme measures... Very atmospheric, with distinct nods to Lovecraft's Mythos.
The story "Night Swimming" seems to be set during the same catastrophe, but in a different time and place; an older man is taking his usual evening swim at the local community pool, an indoor pool with one attendant still on duty. We learn more about the young woman who's the attendant, and about the old man as well - but this just adds to the tension when things start to go south. The city's power goes out, sirens sound - and the stars go out as well... The simple premise of one old man alone in a completely dark swimming pool is unnerving by itself, and when you throw in some dimensional shifts and eldritch horrors creeping into the scene, it gets much worse. Very effective little chiller.
The final story is "The Last Staff Party", which focuses on the party-goers at a hotel - who also experience a sudden power failure, gales of storm winds, what might be an explosion - and then other bizarre and disturbing things. This story expands on the events of the previous one a bit, describing the top secret lab and the explosion and what might have been released as a result - not that the knowledge helps the survivors all that much!
That last story does end on a note of hope, for some worlds if not necessarily this one.
[The book seems to be a self-published one and could use a little help with editing and page layout, but all in all I enjoyed it.]
