I found this slightly-battered softcover in this Little Free Library in Devens MA while dropping off some books of my own. It centers on the character Artyom, describing his rescue as a baby from a horde of huge rats and his subsequent life in the tunnels. There are ongoing battles between the humans and the Dark Ones, with a huge and startling reveal near the end of this book when Artyom makes mental contact with them and realizes... Well, I won't spoil it - and it might be moot (or even illusory), so there's that. But it's a very dramatic ending!
