I got this slightly-battered softcover from Better World Books after enjoying other books by Mitchell, including The Wildest Place on Earth, A Field Guide to Your Own Back Yard, and An Eden of Sorts. [Turns out this copy has more underlining than I'm comfortable with - but perhaps someone else won't be as bothered by it!]

This book also deals with "Scratch Flat", the square mile in which the author's current home lies, though here the emphasis is on history (real, mythical, and maybe-real), including reactions from Wampanoag and Micmac people about what the land was like before the white men came. (The timeline up front features some tantalizing entries: "a shaman who could turn himself into a bear", a Scottish adventurer who "may or may not have seen Scratch Flat in 1399", a man killed in the French and Indian war - and whose ghost may still haunt the area, etc.)

The book includes a true love of the land and a fascination with history - both the official/documented kind and the folklore of other cultures. And the sections that touch on more recent decades highlight the changes in the landscape as technology rolls along; there are some sad accounts of historic buildings vanishing, though in practice I suppose one couldn't preserve ALL of them.

The focus on this one small area helps arrange the topics and limit the scope, though in many respects the story resembles those of other similar areas which may not have as dedicated a scribe...
