I got this ex-library softcover from Better World Books, after having it on my wishlist for some time. Subtitled "Four Seasons, Four Cities, and the Pleasures of Solitude", it sounds like the kind of travel I enjoy (and hope to again, if ever the pandemic precautions are no longer needed).

The book's also notable for featuring BookCrossing - the author stumbled across a BC book and describes her delight very nicely! (Oddly, though, she never wrote a journal entry on it...) I posted about this here when I first read her New York Times article back in 2014; here's a link to the actual book she found, released by BCer elj: L'Affaire est close.

The book itself was more for those who fear to travel alone than for me, as it turned out; I've never had a problem with going to restaurants or movies or other countries by myself, and didn't need the advice here - though I did enjoy reading about some of the author's exploits. Granted, not all of the places she visited were those I'd like to see, but it was nice to have some vicarious sight-seeing.

And I did get some ideas - not for solo travel but for games! She mentioned the board game "Tokaido", which emphasizes experiences instead of just points - it sounds like a lot of fun. And the "Anywhere Travel Guide", a deck of cards with suggestions for ways to change up one's travel experiences - asking someone where their favorite street is and visiting it, having breakfast for dinner or vice versa, little things that might shift one's perspective.

At the end of the book there's a "Tips and Tools" chapter with ideas for those who are worried about going it alone - and among those is another mention of BookCrossing, as a fun solo activity. So points for that!

Taken from the LFL on Beach Street on 11/22 (Sorry for the delay in journaling!) when dropping off books of my own. I couldn't resist the selection of cities and the idea of solitude, which generally is indeed a pleasure. Look forward to this one!
