I found this softcover in this Little Free Library in Carlisle MA while dropping off some books of my own. It's the first of a manga series that inspired an anime.

Later: It's a low-key slice-of-life manga, at least as of this volume, with novice witch Makoto moving in with distant cousins in their small rural village. The youngest cousin is quite surprised to find out that she's a witch, which she learns when they go shopping together and Makoto buys a broom - and tries it out on the spot to be sure she can fly it! Other villagers recognize a new witch when they see one as well, and while the whole witch thing is supposedly to be kept secret, here it seems that everyone talks about it all the time...

Magical incidents include Makoto pulling a mandrake root to give to her cousins' friend as a gift; the mandrake is pretty creepy-looking and does indeed give out a horrifying scream when it's pulled up. [The friend opts not to accept the present {wry grin}.] And then there's the visit from the Harbinger of Spring, a tall masked figure who looks like something out of Spirited Away. At first the little cousin is terrified of it, but she soon learns to value its gifts.

By the end of the book, Makoto's sister - a more experienced witch - breezes in for a quick visit, promising more magic to come.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the manga and anime, with some entertaining tidbits.]
