I got this ex-library hardcover from an online seller. It's by the author of The Last Policeman, but is quite a change of pace - darkly-funny poems of love among the monstrous! There's the one about the girl recalling the boy she used to like, who fell for someone new... she notes that "no one's seen him for a while", and the illustration of her holding an axe suggests a reason. Then there's "What Happened to My Friend Jay?", which reads like a kid upset that a friend has discovered romance and would rather hold hands with his new girlfriend than play with his old pal. But in the poem - and the accompanying illustration - the narrator suggests that it's due to alien mind control...

Some entries are more poignant than others; "Just One More Thing to Tell Her" has an old man sitting alone at night calling his late wife's name, "like a seance! Or a Ouija board party. But it's just the old man - it's no game". He "just sits in the gloom, in the dark of that room, and he hasn't heard anything yet." Very, very sad, that one.

There's a series of "Love is a Monster" poems, each with a different monster as theme. The Jekyll-and-Hyde one hits close to home re some real-world monsters:

"The chameleon,
the hidden place,
the mild-mannered fellow
with the secret face.
The shocking truth,
the shadowed heart,
the unseen danger,
the hidden part."

Another chiller is "The Ring", which means "forever" - and even long after the man is gone, the woman can't get the ring off of her hand...
