I got this handsome hardcover from an online seller, almost entirely on the strength of the lovely cover-art. It's a poignant tale of two young men - one the charismatic leader who will become king, and the other his loyal friend and knight, whose talents on the battlefield and in the logistics of running a kingdom make him invaluable. As the story opens they've just succeeded in ousting the previous king, but as the new king Madeth - already bored with the whole situation - moves towards his throne, the knight Lalvan sees a strange sight: an angel, who descends from a battlement and gives Madeth a kiss...

Madeth neither sees nor feels this, but when he learns that there's a local myth of the angel as the spirit of the castle, whose blessing results in a lord who will rule long and happily, beloved by his subjects, he figures it's got to be a good thing. Right?

Not so, alas. Madeth, while possibly a decent enough fellow at heart, is not cut out to rule, and gradually becomes consumed by jealousy - first, that Lalvan can see the angel but he cannot, and later out of fear that his son by his high-born queen might actually be Lalvan's. This isn't true, but the boy can see the angel, and Madeth considers that proof enough...

Lalvan opts to retire from his post and leave the castle, settling in a small village far away, in hopes that this will let his friend relax and become a caring father and king. But in a few years, the young prince turns up at Lalvan's door, convinced by his father's continued jealousy that Lalvan really is his father. Lalvan's attempts to dissuade him don't have the desired effect, and as the years roll by, it seems that Madeth and his son are both doomed - and Lalvan, unwilling, winds up having to step in once more.

The story's very sad throughout, not least for the moments of cheerful banter between Madeth and Lalvan - these show how close they have been, and make the rifts even more tragic. And the poor lost prince, betrayed by his father and by a counselor he trusted - and by the legend of the angel, whose purpose, if any, seems to be dubious at best...

This one's gone unclaimed for a couple of months now, so I'm taking it out of rotation to make room for some different books.
