I got this softcover manga at Barnes and Noble. (It's based on the Dororo manga by Osamu Tezuka, but retold and with new artwork by Satoshi Shiki. There's a 2019 anime adaptation, with artwork closer to that of this manga than Tezuka's original style.)

The story introduces a feisty little kid, Dororo, who's an able thief and escape artist but is at a disadvantage in this violent world. He meets the enigmatic swordsman Hyakkimaru - whose swords are blades embedded in his upper arms, sheathed inside lower arms that he can eject at will. (That's only the start of his bizarre physical makeup; we don't learn much about it in this first volume but I knew from the original manga that it's very weird indeed.)

The duo meet and form an odd team of sorts, as Hyakkimaru battles demons of various types as well as overbearing and deadly human foes. Another traveling companion is an aged monk, who it's hinted may be the legendary Abe no Seimei - or is that just his idea of humor?

The encounters often feature truly horrific demons, body-horror shapes out of nightmare - though the human enemies and their casual cruelty is somehow more appalling than the demons' intrinsic hunger.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Guidelines for safely visiting and stocking Little Free Libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the LFL site here.

I left this book in this amusingly-designed Little Free Library - and was surprised to have a sparrow burst out when I opened the door; apparently it's been using the sheltered space as protection from the weather! The books still seem in good order despite having company; hope someone enjoys this one!
