To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.
~St. Thomas Aquinas
I love that quote. It presents religion in a tidy way to an agnostic like me. For the convoluted version, this book does nicely.
Aslan approaches the subject of Jesus as someone he used to love and admire, until that pesky thing called critical thinking came along...
So begins the scholarly study of how the Roman Empire turned a man (an illiterate Jewish heretic with brothers and mates, who died surrounded by other criminals on crosses that day) into the Son of God.
I highly recommend the audiobook as well--the author's voice is delicious, but the highlight is his signature inflections of incredulity.
