With a title like that, the rest of the cover doesn't need much fanfare. I believe I may have even LOL'd when I saw it, but, given my Women's Studies courses and my 2nd class citizen status in "Manistan", I knew rape & murder would be at the crux of these essays.
This is not an easy read. I could have done w/o the interruptions to the cadence by Solnit having to appease the not-all-men crowd, and the stats may seem like Feminism has hardly made any inroads, but the fact that we can't possibly publish the progress faster than they are actually happening around the world has to mean something, right? I remain hopeful, in no small part due to the current generation refusing to backslide.

A somewhat emotionally difficult read due to the subject matter. This was my first Solnit book, and I was not nearly as impressed with her writing as I had expected to be. I found it a bit convoluted and unclear in places; in others, it seemed rather pedantic. Somehow I was expecting interesting imagery or inspired metaphors, but the prose was mostly either slightly awkward or else unadorned and lacking creativity.

Also, this collection pulls together pieces that were previously published elsewhere. That structure gave the book an eclectic, rather than cohesive, feel and also led to inevitable repetition when Solnit said basically the same thing in multiple essays.

Worth the read, but I wasn't as blown away as I had anticipated. I would read Solnit again in the future, but also won't rush to do so.
