One of ten British Library Crime Classics given as a donation for our church bookstall. I just had to purchase them all!
An enjoyable read. "Great Barwick's least popular man is murdered on a train. Twelve jurors sit in court. Four suspects are identified - but which of them is on trial?"

Thank you, Deltic - I love it when the postman brings me a parcel, especially a book parcel! This was sitting on the back step when we got back from the local farm shop yesterday :-)
As you know, I'm quite a fan of British Library Crime Classics and am happy to read as many as come my way, so a big thank you for sending them in my direction, much appreciated!

I loved the concept of this book, the idea of the court case with the unknown defendant, alternating with the investigation of the murder of the odious Cargate.
However, I found it a bit wordy at times, with details often over described (I think my eyes glazed a little over some of the philately facts!) & as to the timings of who-was-where-&-when, well to be honest I lost track!
Overall, a good decent read but despite the clever plot construction it didn't engage me as much as I had expected.

A book I will definitely read as I too, seem to gravitate towards reading the British Library Crime Classics with variable results. It has to be borne in mind that they are of their times in many respects but if you prefer detection to 'blood and guts' as I do, these are often the antidote for a blank day!

I am so glad I decided to read this before passing it on again. I do usually enjoy the British Library Classics although they can be 'of their time' or a little slow by today's standards.
I thought this was one which could be a little slow at times but the concept was delicious and well thought out. The storyline was intriguing, complicated and neatly told in the courtroom format. To my mind one of the better ones from the Library and a fairly unusual storyline - even for these times!
Time for this to move on again and gain some more appreciative readers, so watch below.
