A professor invites a colleague from the art department to his home to see a painting that he has kept secret for decades. The professor swears it's a Vermeer- but why has he hidden this important work of art for so long. The reasons unfold in a series of stories that trace ownership of the painting back to WW II and Amsterdam, and still further back to the moment of the works inspiration in the mid 1600's. As the painting moves through each owner's hands, what was long hidden quietly surfaces, illuminating poignant moments in human lives.
Each chapter tells of a different owner, their lives, how they got the painting and why they had to let it go. Thou at times it's rather hard to follow since you're going forward in someone's life but backwards thru the book it is quite a good book. Would make a good book ring if I can get one going.

Sent out to guinaveve for the book ray!
I got this in the mail today. I just finished the last book I was reading so I am ready to start this one immediately. I love when it works out like that. I will journal again when I am finished and then send it on. Thanks!
I loved this book. I tried to decide which story surrounding the painting's ownership I liked best, but I am just not sure. Almost all of them captivated me, and the few that didn't, I still enjoyed thoroughly.
When I read the book's description, I thought I would like the story, but the set up of going backwards would bother me. It didn't at all and worked perfectly.
I will be sending this on for the next person to enjoy within a few days.

Enjoy!
Just received today! It's one of those "perfect timing...I just finished my last book earlier today" books. So I should be able to dive in right away!
This was a quick read, but a good one. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I did like the format -- the way each chapter went backwards in time a little bit. I don't think I've ever read another book like that. At times I almost cried -- it pulled at my heartstrings. Very well written. Hope others enjoy it as well!
I will be sending this on to wolfprincess tomorrow.

I recieved book today. I am going to start it tonight after I finish my last chapter in my other book.
This was a good book to read with diffrent stories to choose from for the picture. I agree with Indygo88 I have never read a book written in a format like this. I enjoyed reading this book. When I get mjm's address I will get the book off into the mail.
UPDATE: I am mailing book out tomarrow 11/3/05

Finished this book yesterday and really enjoyed the way the narrative retraced the degrees of separation from the present day owner to its origins. At times I felt a little lost in the beginning, but once I caught on, it was a quick read. And who doesn't love a Vermeer? OR was it a Vermeer? :)
Contacted next reader yesterday to send me their address. Will get this in the mail ASAP.

Received in the post yesterday. Did not have computer access. Will be reading after the 10 rings that I have in my possession.
03/21/06 Finished this one and ready to post on to the next reader in the ring: Luintaurien. Pm'd for her address. I thought this this writing style was a bit hard to get used to (backwards) but I really enjoyed the way the written word put me right in the middle of each chapter. I feel like I lived it. Thank you so much for sharing this one with us.
UPDATE: 6/11/06 Will be posting out to Luintaurien this week. Sorry to all who have been waiting so long for this great read.
