This was my favorite read of 2019. I actually listened to it on audio, and then bought this copy as a gift for somebody else, but changed my mind and kept it.
This is a really long novel, over 600 pages, and I was not that impressed when I first started it. The beginning is not that much different from other stories of immigrant families (in this case Ireland)becoming upwardly mobile in America. But about halfway through it becomes a mystery. Not a whodunnit murder mystery, but a mystery of a different sort. It's one of those books that is powerful not just because of what it shows, but what it doesn't, and what the reader is left to interpolate.
I will be eager to read any more novels Matthew Thomas writes.

Very excited to have discovered this one from First Sentence Wrap It Up Book Box.
