I found this softcover in this Little Free Library in Nashua NH while dropping off some books of my own, and nabbed it for an upcoming circus-themed release challenge.

It's about young Trix, an orphan who's attending a snobbish boarding school as a charity case - and there's a group of Mean Girls who won't let her forget it. She's biding her time 'til she can get out - and then the Circus Galacticus comes to town. And (surprise!) the "Galacticus" in the name is quite literal; the Big Top is a space-ship/TARDIS-esque semi-sentient thing, and the performers come from a variety of far-flung places. Trix is happy to go with the circus when it leaves, but it turns out there's more going on than doing spectacular acrobatic moves for a galactic audience... The SF angle includes a battle between forces that want to force every sentient being into a single mold and those that want freedom. (I preferred the "kid finds/builds their own 'family'" aspect to the galactic-strife one, though.)
